FIFA Punishes Super Eagles for Defeating Argentina, Drops Nigeria to 50th in Ranking

Super Eagles Coach – Gernot Rhor

A lot of football pundits would be surprised that the highly rated Super Eagles squad now robs shoulders with less footballing nations like Venezuela, Jamaica, Panama and Haiti following the latest FIFA men’s football rankings for the month of November 2017.

Nigeria now occupies the 9th spot in Africa from the previous 5th position in the last month football rankings in Africa and subsequently, the 50th ranked team in the world from the September ranking that saw Nigeria at the 41st position.

This is least expected following a convincing beating of Argentina by four goals to two in an international friendly held in Russia on 14th of November. The Argentines who were 4th in the world have their position unchanged, even with the loss to Super Eagles.

Germany still remained the best ranked team in the world, followed by Brazil (2nd), Portugal (3rd), Argentina (4th), and Belgium (5th) respectively. In Africa, Tunisia has been displaced by Senegal as the West African team is now 23rd in the world and the 1st team in Africa. Others are Tunisia (27th), Egypt (31st), Congo DR (36th), Morocco (40th), Burkina Faso (44th), Cameroon (45th), Nigeria (50th), Ghana (51st), and Ivory Coast (61st) in the world respectively.
